Vernacular Development Corp. was founded in 1997 in North Vancouver, BC as a design-build firm. In addition to the North Shore, the company completed successful projects in Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Britannia Beach, and Calgary.
Later, the company became specialized in rezoning for higher density in residential neighbourhoods, a solution to towards affordable housing. Notably, it was the first company to rezone a single-family lot into 3 freehold units in West Vancouver, as well as was the first to initiate and successfully complete a project with a laneway home or coach house in West Vancouver and North Vancouver respectively. Additionally, the company was also the first to rezone an 8-unit freehold Rowhouse project in Port Coquitlam, BC.
Vernacular Development has been awarded the Residential Conservation Award from The Heritage Advisory Commission for three respective projects done in North Vancouver. These accomplishments established the company as one of the best heritage restoration firms on the North Shore.
In 2010, the Company expanded its services to construction and development management, becoming Vernacular Group of Companies. Over the years, the company successfully completed a number of design-build and development projects. Vernacular Development has also worked on some community-scale projects in Calgary AB, Britannia Beach BC, and The Westbank First Nation in Kelowna. In 2015, the Company was recognized by Chief Robert Louie of the Westbank First Nation for working on a community plan to increase the provision of affordable housing. Additionally, in 2014 the company received its LEED Certification for neighbourhood development.
Adrien joined in 2010 and has helped bring the company to the next level by expanding services to Construction & Development Management. Adrien holds a Bachelor of Arts and a degree in Urban Land Economics from the University of British Columbia. He has been involved in a number of innovative community design projects including the Westbank First Nation in Kelowna and a residential community in Britannia Beach. He also holds a LEED Certification.
Founder & Vice-President Development
Mehrdad achieved both, his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture, at McGill University. He worked in a Montreal based Architectural firm before establishing Vernacular Design in 1997 in Vancouver. Since then, he has led the company to an award winning, design-build firm. In the past, he served as a member of the City of North Vancouver Advisory Design Panel and the Advisory Planning Commission. In his free time, Mehrdad enjoys painting and sculpting.
Roya has been with the company since 2002 and today she leads the architectural and interior design departments. With over 20 years experience, she applies her "can-do" attitude to projects from conception to completion. She maintains excellent working relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors. She has won a number of Heritage Conservation design awards on the North Shore.
Marie Del Borrello
Marie has been with the company since 2001. She oversees finance, accounting, and administrative matters. Prior to joining Vernacular Development, she had extensive experience working in accounting, insurance, and construction firms
