Vernacular Development Corp. was founded in 1997 in Vancouver, BC as a design firm. The company completed successful projects in the Greater Vancouver area, the Okanagan Valley, and Alberta.
Later, the company became specialized in rezoning for higher density in residential neighbourhoods, a solution towards affordable housing. Notably, it was the first company to rezone narrow lot subdivisions North and West Vancouver, as well as was one of the first to initiate projects with Laneway homes in the Greater Vancouver Area. Additionally, the company was also the first in BC to rezone an 8-unit freehold Row-house project in British Columbia. Since its inception, Vernacular developed a number of small and large affordable housing projects, working in collaboration with non-profit housing societies and BC Housing.
In 2010, the company expanded its services to construction and development, becoming Vernacular Development. Over the years, the company successfully completed a number of design-build and multi-family developments. Vernacular Development has also worked on a number of community-scale projects in Calgary AB, Britannia Beach BC, and the Westbank First Nation (WFN) in the Okanagan Valley. In 2015, the company was given special recognition by WFN Council for planning and design of two affordable housing projects in Westbank. In 2014, the company received its LEED Certification for neighbourhood development.
