Vernacular Development Corp. was founded in 1997 in North Vancouver, BC as a design-build firm. In addition to the North Shore, the company completed successful projects in Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Britannia Beach, and Calgary.
Later, the company became specialized in rezoning for higher density in residential neighbourhoods, a solution to towards affordable housing. Notably, it was the first company to rezone a single-family lot into 3 freehold units in West Vancouver, as well as was the first to initiate and successfully complete a project with a laneway home or coach house in West Vancouver and North Vancouver respectively. Additionally, the company was also the first to rezone an 8-unit freehold Rowhouse project in Port Coquitlam, BC.
Vernacular Development has been awarded the Residential Conservation Award from The Heritage Advisory Commission for three respective projects done in North Vancouver. These accomplishments established the company as one of the best heritage restoration firms on the North Shore.
In 2010, the Company expanded its services to construction and development management, becoming Vernacular Group of Companies. Over the years, the company successfully completed a number of design-build and development projects. Vernacular Development has also worked on some community-scale projects in Calgary AB, Britannia Beach BC, and The Westbank First Nation in Kelowna. In 2015, the Company was recognized by Chief Robert Louie of the Westbank First Nation for working on a community plan to increase the provision of affordable housing. Additionally, in 2014 the company received its LEED Certification for neighbourhood development.
Marie Del Borrello
Marie oversees finance, investments, accounting and administrative matters at Vernacular Group. With her experience in finance, real estate and construction industry, she brings a strong leadership role in the company and its future mission. Marie holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Concordia University. Prior to joining Vernacular Development, she worked as an accountant for development & construction firms.
Gordon manages the construction division of Vernacular Group and oversees all construction projects in the company. Prior to joining Vernacular in 2010, he worked as a Project Manager for BigCity Construction. Gordon holds a degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia and Building Technology from BCIT. He has served on the board of the CHBA-BC and the Greater Vancouver Home Builders' Association.
Design & Construction Manager
Roya leads the Design-Build department at Vernacular Group and has been with the company since 2002. She has designed and managed construction of several commercial and residential projects. With over 18 years of experience, she applies her "can-do" attitude to projects from conception to completion. She maintains excellent working relationship with clients, consultants, and contractors. She has won a number of design awards in British Columbia.
Mehrdad Robert Rahbar
Mehrdad manages development, planning and design activities at Vernacular Group. He joined the company as a Designer & Project Manager and led many mix-used, custom designed, multi-family residential and affordable housing projects. He holds a Bachelor and Master’s in Architecture from McGill University. He worked in a Montreal based Architectural firm before joining Vernacular Group. In the past, he served as a member of the City of North Vancouver Advisory Design Panel and the Advisory Planning Commission.
